One Young Boy Makes a Splash in Swim Lessons

January 22, 2025

A look at how the Denver Mill Levy Program connected a young boy with special needs to swim lessons that empower him to believe in himself and his ability to achieve.

For many families, swim lessons are more than just a fun activity for children—they’re a chance to build confidence, stay safe, and embrace a love of water. Providing access to swim lessons is one of the most common supports that the Denver Mill Levy Program, a program of Rocky Mountain Human Services (RMHS), offers to families of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

Stephanie, the mother of an almost-kindergartener with I/DD named Oliver, enrolled her son in swim lessons with the support of the Denver Mill Levy Program more than three years ago. These lessons have been a meaningful part of their lives ever since.

Oliver finds pure joy in the water and builds confidence with every splash. For Stephanie, the opportunity to see her child with special needs thrive in an environment where his unique strengths shine, brings a profound sense of reassurance and peace.

Recently, Stephanie shared her gratitude with the Mill Levy team, reflecting on what this support means to her family.

“I wanted to send a quick thank you for allowing us to continue to have swim lessons. It’s been so impactful. Oliver leveled up in swimming today!

He’s been in swim lessons for three years and absolutely loves his time in the water! Today at swim lessons a manager who just happened to be filling in got to meet Oliver for the first time. His enthusiasm and joy for the water just blew her away. She came up and introduced herself to me saying that she had been a special ed teacher for years and while she had just met Oliver, she could see that he had so much potential and told me that all special needs children deserve the opportunity to level up even if it’s at a modified pace. She was in tears and so was I.

In a world that feels so isolating to raise a child with disabilities it felt so good to have this person recognize Oliver’s potential and give me the reminder that there are good people and companies who value my child, disabilities and all.

So, thank you for all you do!”

It’s been a pleasure working with Stephanie and her son Oliver, and their journey reflects the powerful impact of accessible swim lessons on children with I/DD. This opportunity has not only helped Oliver build confidence and skill in the water but has also fostered a sense of inclusion and support for the entire family. We thank them for sharing their experience and for offering us an opportunity to celebrate Oliver’s achievements together.
